CHAPTER ONE: GENESIS



Plot

Isaac paints a mushroom cloud over New York City. Hiro teleports around the world. Niki sees something very strange in the mirror, Claire films herself jumping off an oil rig, and Peter learns his brother Nathan can fly. And so it begins.

CHAPTER TWO: DON'T LOOK BACK



Plot

Nathan admits that he can fly, while Mohinder digs deeper into the mysterious work of his father and the conspiracy that had him murdered. Meanwhile, Hiro realizes his exploits are the subject of Isaac's ''9th Wonders'' comic book (only to end up framed for his murder) and Niki cleans up the bodies of two mafia thugs she's killed. Across the country, a pudgy L.A. cop seems to be able to read minds and for the very first time we hear the name ''Sylar.''

CHAPTER THREE: ONE GIANT LEAP



Plot

Ahh, the episode in which our protagonists begin to understand their powers. Hiro stops time and saves a little girl from being hit by a truck. Parkman reads the mind of an FBI agent and is drafted to hunt Sylar. Then there's the chiller: Mohinder and his pixie-ish neighbor break into Sylar's apartment, finding a book on dissecting brains and a room with the words ''Forgive me, I have sinned'' scrawled over and over again on the walls.

CHAPTER FOUR: COLLISION



Plot

What happens when heroes meet? Niki/Jessica seduces Nathan to repay her debt to Linderman at the same casino where Hiro stops time to line his wallet. Claire goes vigilante on the quarterback. A frustrated Mohinder almost gives up, before Peter appears on his doorstep saying there may be truth to his father's theories after all; then Peter gets a visitor of his own — future Hiro.

CHAPTER FIVE: HIROS



Plot

Even if you've never watched the show, chances are you know this line: ''Save the cheerleader, save the world.'' While Peter parses Future Hiro's directive, Nathan jets from Bennet and the Haitian's clutches. Parkman collapses under the weight of everyone's thoughts, D.L. shows his face, and Hiro and Ando reunite to continue their mission. Peter absorbs Isaac's powers — and draws Claire just before her end.

CHAPTER SIX: BETTER HALVES



Plot

Peter talks to Hiro on the phone, tells him he must ''STCSTW.'' HRG sets up a meeting between Claire and her supposed ''bio-parents.'' D.L. sneaks into Niki's house and tells her he didn't pull the Linderman heist — somebody set him up. And Jessica finally reveals herself to Niki, admitting that she (they?) betrayed D.L. and stole Linderman's money. D.L. catches Niki with the cash, they fight, and he takes off with the money and Micah.

CHAPTER SEVEN: NOTHING TO HIDE



Plot

Simone has a really bad day: first her dad dies, then she discovers that Isaac and his paintings have disappeared. She and Peter meet up at Isaac's studio, where tells him she sold the missing painting to Linderman. Elsewhere, Parkman and Agent Audrey Hanson team up to investigate what they think is another Sylar murder. But a fingerprint leads instead to a guy named Ted Sprague, who, they learn, emits massive amounts of radiation when he gets upset. At the end of the episode Micah reveals a heroic ability of his own — a power over machines.

CHAPTER EIGHT: SEVEN MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT



Plot

Isaac, it turns out, is holed up inside HRG's headquarters. HRG tells him that the cheerleader in his paintings is his daughter, that Sylar is going to kill her the following night, and that ''for many years now a number of us have been tracking, locating, monitoring people like you.'' Parkman questions Ted and discovers they both have the same pair of black lines on their necks. On the road, Hiro meets a waitress who can remember everything she reads — and who soon gets killed by Sylar. Hiro decides to try to save her by traveling back in time.

CHAPTER NINE: HOMECOMING



Plot

While a mysterious dream-child in India helps Mohinder find the password to his father's files, the ''freak vote'' helps Claire win Homecoming Queen. In Texas, Peter meets Ando at a diner, then encounters Claire at Odessa High, not realizing she's the cheerleader until after Sylar has unzipped the wrong girl's brain. At exactly 8:12 p.m., a rooftop rumble ends with Peter and Sylar tumbling to the ground in a bloody pulp. The baddie escapes into the woods, where Eden works a Jedi mind trick and the Haitian puts him to sleep. The cops cuff Peter.
